The essentials
Cassis has two main beaches near the harbour: the Grande Mer, at the foot of the village (pebbles and coarse sand, about five minutes' walk from the quay), and the quieter Bestouan, known for its clear water. Further out, the calanque coves — Port-Miou, Port-Pin, En-Vau — offer wilder swimming. The Grande Mer is reached on foot; the coves by trail or boat. After the swim, the largest shaded terrace on the harbour, at Le Bistrot de Nino, lets you lunch facing the sea, dogs welcome.
The village beach

The Grande Mer is the emblematic beach of Cassis, reached in about five minutes on foot from the harbour and the quay. No car needed — you simply follow the waterfront past the terraces.
It is a mixed beach of pebbles and coarse sand, facing the bay and the Cap Canaille. Not huge, but its position in the heart of the village is hard to beat.
The mood is that of a village beach: family-friendly, lively in summer, with every shop and restaurant a few steps away. In July and August, arrive early — it fills up by midday.
The other beach
The Bestouan beach,clear water and calm
On the far side of the harbour, the Bestouan offers a calmer face of Cassis — about ten minutes on foot along the shore, with parking to find up the streets. In summer, spaces go early.
Famous for its clear water, fed by an underwater freshwater spring, it is a pebble beach loved by families and by snorkelling and diving fans exploring the bright seabed.
The two beaches complement each other: the Grande Mer for a quick swim in the village, the Bestouan for a calmer morning in translucent water.

Beyond the village, Cassis opens onto the Calanques: Port-Miou, a long white-limestone inlet; Port-Pin and its small pebble beach; and En-Vau, a spectacular turquoise cove for walkers.
These are not equipped beaches: access is by trail, bike or boat, the swimming wild and the water cool and clear. Bring good shoes, water, and check seasonal access.

When to cometo the beach in Cassis
The swimming season roughly runs from late spring to early autumn, with warm water from June to September. July and August are the sunniest but busiest, with beaches full by mid-morning.
For fewer crowds, June and September are the sweet spot. Mornings, in any season, stay the calmest: swim early, then head off before the midday rush.

The Grande Mer is a few minutes' walk from the quay, the Bestouan a short stroll along the sea. The best move in Cassis is to leave the car and do everything on foot.
Parking in high season
